Jonathan Walters has taken his anger out on a punch bag after Roy Keane's comments

Former Burnley striker Jonathan Walters has reacted to Roy Keane's controversial comments about him by posting a picture of himself with a punch bag.

In the image, Walters has drawn an X on the punching bag, and added the caption: 'Insert face here', in reference to Keane.

Speaking during an on-stage conversation with Off The Ball, former Republic of Ireland assistant manager Keane criticised Walters as well as Harry Arter and Stephen Ward.

Keane said: 'Jon does a lot of talking, it's amazing.

'Imagine if Jon won a trophy. He talks a good game. He goes on the TV, on about how he was harshly treated by me. Not kicking a ball for Burnley for two or three years.'

Keane also commented on Walters' appearance on Ireland's Late Late Show, when the former forward spoke about the deaths of his mother and brother.

Walters spoke about how his mother died when he was just 11 years old, and also emphasised the pain of his brother's death and his daughter having scoliosis.

While criticising Walters, Keane commented on his lack of medals.

Walters was left angry after Keane criticised him for talking about his family problems on TV

Keane said: '[He was] On TV, crying about his family situation. You know, how about lying low for a while, taking it easy. Have a look at his medals? Wouldn't take long.

'Ironically two or three years ago when his career was coming to the end, he went on loan, he went to Ipswich on loan. I was laughing my head off.

'When we were beaten by Wales, he [Walters] didn't have a good game. Wardy played, didn't have a good game. They need to go back and watch how bad they

Keane was heavily critical of Walters and was keen to point out the ex-forward's lack of medals

There was a difficult relationship between Walters and Keane when the latter was in charge of Ipswich, but they temporarily managed to resolve their differences in the Ireland setup.

That changed when details emerged of a training ground argument that saw Keane clash with both Walters and Arter.

Walters, who scored 14 goals in 54 appearances for Ireland, retired from playing in March.

During his career he played in the Premier League for Burnley, Stoke and Bolton, and also had spells at a host of other clubs including Hull, Wrexham and Chester.
